The original Spirograph pen refills were 105 mm in length. The replacement Spirograph pen refills are 106 mm. The extra millimeter is in the tip of the replacement cartridges, so it does not interfere with the functioning of the pen mechanism itself! However, if you find that the extra protrusion of the pen tip causes the gear to slip, just loosen the pen barrel by half a twist and that will help.

Let’s say you now have your own child and you wanted to share the wonder of the original Spirograph educational toy from the 1960s with him or her. You excitedly purchase the new version of the Spirograph and you become really disappointed with how meager it is. You set out to find your old one in storage or you even fork out a ton of money to buy one on eBay. You are so excited when you open it up and lo and behold..... the pens are dried up.
