My Personal Spirograph® Experience and Search for Pen Refills.
Let’s say you now have your own child and you wanted to share the wonder of the original Spirograph® educational toy from the 1960s with him or her. You excitedly purchase the new version of the Spirograph® and you become really disappointed with how meager it is. You set out to find your old one in storage or you even fork out a ton of money to buy one on eBay. You are so excited when you open it up and lo and behold..... the pens are
dried up. You think... no problem, I’ll just go get some refills. Ahhhh... that IS a problem! They don’t sell these old refills just anywhere. The kind of ball point refills that most office supply stores now carry are the modern cone-shaped “roller ball” tip. Unfortunately, as you will discover, these tips will not fit through the tiny holes in the Spirograph® gears!
Well take heart! This scenario actually did happen to me, Howard Richman, so you are not alone! That is why I did a TON of research to find the correct replacement and I’m now excited to share my discovery with you. What you are looking for are the old style ball point pens. Most people wouldn’t really care about this, but I know, if you happen to be looking for these refills, you’ll be thrilled that you finally found them!
Replacement Pens are for 1960s Kenner Spirograph.®
 We are certainly aware that the Spirograph® has had many, many versions over the years. The pen
replacements that we offer fit the Kenner toys version of the product that was made between 1965 and 1969, as pictured here. This includes the “Super Spirograph®” and other variants made during that time period.
The pens will ALSO work in the “Spirograph Plus®” from 1983/1984. The only thing in that case is that the colors will be off. Those units had three pens: Blue, Red (Pink) and Orange, but at least you know that the replacement pens would fit! Try our multicolor pen if you want these alternate colors.
It is possible that the pens and pen refills will also be compatible with earlier and later versions of the toy, made by other companies, but we cannot guarantee that. If you have spirographs from 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1984, our pens WILL PROBABLY WORK! If your model used felt-tip pens then our pens will NOT work!
Original Pen Tip and Modern “Rollerball” Tip Comparison.
 Beware other “Spirograph® Pens” suppliers who just want
to make a buck but don’t really care about your happiness. They claim that their pens “work perfectly with the small holes on the Spirograph® Wheels” but this is actually not true. In our tests, their pens MAY FIT INTO THE HOLES OF THE SPIROGRAPH GEARS BUT THEY FIT SO TIGHTLY THAT THERE IS NO ROOM FOR PLAY! This means that their pens create
friction as you attempt to draw, which results in errors and frustrating skipping and mistakes. Although it is tempting to get their pens that write in 12 colors, you will most likely be disappointed!

Official Spirograph® Pen Refills.

If you have the pens that came with your Spirograph® toy but they are dried out, then you just need the refills. The original Spirograph® pen
refills were 105 mm in length. The replacement Spirograph® pen refills are 106 mm. The extra millimeter is in the tip of the replacement cartridges, so it does not interfere with the functioning of the pen mechanism itself! However, if you find that the extra protrusion of the pen tip causes the gear to slip, just loosen the pen barrel by half a twist and that will help.
The tip is called “medium tip,” like the original was, not “fine tip.” Also known as “x-10 refills” or “x-10 ballpoint pen refills, “thin ballpoint pens” or “thin tip ballpoint pen refills.”
Note: our Spirograph® Pen refills will fit both your original Spirograph® pens AND also the replacement Spirograph® pens, below. If you are buying the pens, it may be a good idea to buy one refill kit to have it ready.
These ballpoint pen cartridges ALSO will fit ANY old-fashioned vintage ballpoint pen from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, before they started phasing out this size. We are gradually adding to this list, with the help of our customers.
