        This free Gradual Colon Cleansing Recipe is the original gradual colon cleanse recipe as outlined by Howard Richman. It is posted here for nostalgic purposes, even though the recipe has been since modified and improved in the form of the 10-Point Colon Cleanse.

        I’ve compiled the following recommendations based on my personal research with at least 10 different cleansing systems, over a period of 25 years. I suffered with terrible constipation growing up. I had headaches from autointoxication almost every day until I was 21 years old and I started my research into holistic healing. I’ve always been thin, but I used to have to loosen my belt in order to sit down! This program is an amalgam of the best things I’ve found to work, brought together for your experimentation. I am NOT a doctor. I’m passionate about this subject and I wanted to share my discoveries with you.

        Any intestinal cleansing procedure that you embark on should NOT be considered a treatment for a disease or condition. Your choice to do a cleansing program is NEVER a substitute for getting medical attention. Taking herbs may interact with certain medications you may be taking and it is best to consult with your doctor before taking any herbs.

        If you have already become accustomed to taking laxatives in order to have an evacuation, then this recipe will probably not help you to move your bowels! If you want to cleanse your colon, in that case, you should consider one of the many colon cleanse programs that include laxatives such as Dual Action Cleanse and Blessed Herbs.

      • It is not recommended to do a cleansing program if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Women may experience a change of menstrual cycle while on a cleansing program. In these cases, the pattern of ovulation may change, invalidating any birth control technique involving knowing or estimating one’s fertility period.
      • The following plan was designed to be the MOST effective to help cleanse your intestinal tract while being the LEAST intrusive into your daily lifestyle. You won’t be needing to take massive amounts of bulking agent and having to carry your shaker around with you. You won’t be running to the toilet every five minutes. You will be able to maintain a normal diet instead of fasting.

        This is a plan to help alleviate constipation and to promote vibrant health, by GRADUALLY removing, layer by layer, the “mucoid plaque” that has accumulated from the inside walls of the small and large intestines. This will then allow the lymph to drain into the colon and help the cleansing of every cell in your body, which will have a profound impact on all kinds of annoying illnesses. It is called “colon cleansing” which refers to the large intestine but it also cleans the small intestine.

        Between One Week and One Year.

        The following recipe can be done anywhere between one week and one year or more, depending on the accumulation of toxic waste. You will know when to stop because weird stuff will stop coming out. Each person is different. It really depends on you. By the way, even though you hear other programs offering a shorter plan like the “7 day cleanse” you eventually realize that you are not completely cleaned out with these other systems after 7 days and that they usually require more days than they say, or repeat attempts.

        Notice that the schedule below recommends different things depending on the time of the day. The large quantity of mucoid plaque dissolving supplements are taken at night. The main “intestinal broom” (to sweep out the junk) ingredients are taken in the morning. This makes sense because during the night when you are sleeping, there is no additional food or liquid intake and the supplements have a better chance to adhere to the walls of the intestines and do their job. This is ANOTHER reason why we don’t recommend laxatives on this program because if you force the material out too quickly it won’t have a long enough chance to dissolve the mucoid plaque.

        Purchase the Products Below and Get Everything Ready.

        Here are the elements you will need to make it work the best. You don’t have to get every single element but it will work best if you do. Many of these can be purchased at your local health food store or supermarket except for a few of them. The one’s with the blue underlined hyperlinks below are the ones that are hard to find and I’ve linked to sources where you can get them for sure.

        • Mucus-Dissolving Capsules contain pepsin, which is an enzyme that dissolves hardened mucus. They also contain a mucilaginous herb to help the pepsin stick to the intestinal wall long enough for the pepsin to do its job. They are all very similar in their potency. Experiment to find the one or combination of products that seems best for your body. Please note that the instructions on the bottle are to take this after each meal. We recommend that you take it on an empty stomach so that it will help “digest” the mucoid plaque lining your intestines rather than the food you’ve just eaten.         • Papain Powder (Life Extension) helps to digest mucoid waste
        • grape or cherry juice is very cleansing
        • unfiltered apple cider vinegar helps create alkaline condition
        • lemons help create alkaline condition
        • citrus juicer to create lemon juice
        • baking soda to rinse mouth from lemons or vinegar
        • filtered or distilled water, NEVER tap water.
        • liquid bentonite (suggest Sonnes #7) absorbs pesticides, heavy metals and other toxins. For an interesting article on bentonite, please click here.
        • psyllium husk powder (suggest Yerba Prima) creates “intestinal broom” to push loosened material out
        • psyllium seed powder (suggest Sonne’s #9) helps to pull junk off the intestinal wall
        • vitamin C crystals help to dissolve mucous waste. This may create diarrhea in some people. It works great but you might want to try the program without this at first and then gradually add it in to the mix.
        • bone meal powder is a very digestible form of calcium. Calcium is a crucial mineral to stimulate normal peristalsis of the intestines. Other pre-packaged cleansing formulas include calcium carbonate which comes from “elemental sources” which is NOT digestible and can lead to arteriosclerosis or arthritis!
        • probiotic capsules provides intestinal “flora” (suggest Jarrow)
        • cayenne capsules break up mucous and increase circulation
        • pancreatin capsules digest mucoid waste
        • natural bristle skin brush stimulates flow of lymph towards the bowel to be excreted

        Arising (do this one hour BEFORE you eat breakfast)

        Mix together in an empty peanut butter jar:

        • half-fill with grape or cherry juice
        • quarter-fill with water
        • 3 tablespoons liquid bentonite
        • 1 heaping teaspoon of psyllium HUSK powder
        • 1 level teaspoon of vitamin C crystals (see warning above)
        • 1/2 teaspoon papain powder
        • 1/2 teaspoon psyllium SEED powder
        • 1/2 teaspoon bone meal powder

        Shake well for 10 seconds and drink immediately. With this drink take the following supplements:

        • 2 probiotic capsules
        • 2 cayenne capsules

        In another glass put the juice of five lemons OR 1 tablesoon unfiltered apple cider vinegar with water. (Immediately after taking the lemon juice or vinegar, rinse your mouth out with a solution of 1 teaspoon baking soda in a glass of water to prevent the acid in the lemon juice from damaging the enamel on your teeth. You can drink the lemon juice with a straw to help minimize this problem. The baking soda is alkaline and the lemon or vinegar is acid and it helps neutralize it.) After this, take another glass of water. You will see how much additional water you need. Since the psyllium absorbs liquid, it is important to take enough water or it will actually CREATE constipation!

        One hour BEFORE Lunch and again before Dinner:

        • 2 pancreatin capsules
        • 4 mucus-dissolving capsules

        Before bed, with fruit and/or with water or juice

        • 6 pancreatin capsules
        • 12 mucus-dissolving capsules
        • If you miss any of the day’s prior servings, add that serving to this final evening one. Also, if you’ve not been able to get BOTH the okra-pepsin E3 AND the small intestine detox, then you can double the dosages of the one you DO HAVE in each of the three servings above. So, for example, if you only have the okra-pepsin, take 4 before lunch and dinner and 12 before bed.

        Before shower
        Skin brushing with natural bristle brush. Brush all parts of the body TOWARDS the abdomen.

        Stretching and exercise
        Not much is necessary, but do a little each day.

        • Walking.
        • Trampoline is fantastic to help loosen mucoid plaque. This is because there is an accelerated gravitational response with each bounce that can be helpful to help dislodge matter that has just been loosened by the recipe. You only need to do 1 minute a day on a mini-trampoline!
        • Sit ups. This is useful to stimulate peristalsis.
        • In a standing position, Lean your upper body to the left with your right hand above your head as far as possible and hold for 10 seconds. Then reverse. This is very stimulating to the nerves of the colon.

        Abdomenal massage
        This is a perfect complement to help loosen the material. As the herbs are working on a chemical level, the massage can help on a mechanical level.

        • LARGE INTESTINE MASSAGE. For 1 minute 2x/day: in a circular motion, up on right and down on left, simulating the natural movement of the bowels. You can do this sitting, standing or lying down.
        • SMALL INTESTINE MASSAGE. For 1 minute 2x/day: Start by placing fingers in belly button area and press into abdomen and rotate in small circles. Don’t press too hard and DO NOT CAUSE INJURY! But you can feel where the “hard” areas are and those are the areas that can use a little massage.

        Self-Accupressure
        The nerves that come out of the spine near the lower back go to the small intestine, large intestine, and rectum. As you’re sitting on the toilet, you can reach behind your own back and press and hold or press and rotate these areas of the lower back near the spine and this will stimulate a bowel movement.

        Foot Reflexology
        Different parts of the bottom of the foot are like a map of the whole body. When you stimulate the specific part of the foot, you are stimulating that part of the body! You can make a life study of this. But here’s all you really need to know: As you’re massaging the bottom of your foot, where you have 1) Pain or 2) Callouses, this is an indication of the “blocked energy” in your body and would suggest where you can really dig in, even if it hurts a little. Do this for about 2 minutes a day. It’s helpful to get a Footsie Rollerfootsie roller for your main foot area and a stick to use on the sides of your big toe or other specific areas. (The back end of a tooth brush would do, or a cut-off segment of a 1/4 inch wood dowel.)

        Drink a lot throughout the day.
        The psyllium absorbs many times it’s size in moisture and will CREATE constipation if you don’t hydrate yourself. Coffee, alcohol and sodas dehydrate you so you have to drink even MORE water if you drink these beverages! If you can start drinking distilled water, it will help the program. At least, get purified water that has no chlorine in it.

        Eat normally.
        One of the convenient things about this approach to colon cleansing is that you can continue to eat “normally.” However, if you can reduce the intake of “mucoid-forming” foods in your diet, the herbs will help to dissolve the existing mucous waste rather than the newly-created waste! Try to reduce your intake of sweets and dairy products. Yogurt and buttermilk seem to be ok for most people as well as goat’s milk cheese. These dairy products are “pre-digested” with bacteria and enzymes respectively and they don’t cause as much of a mucous reaction in most people.

        Here are optional supplements that you can add to your meals that will enhance the results:

        • 2 heaping tablespoon of lecithin granules 1x/day. Lecithin is an “emulsifier” and will help dissolve mucoid plaque in the intestinal tract as well as in the arteries. Can sprinkle on cereal or salad or steamed vegetables.
        • 1 teaspoon of coconut oil. This helps dissolve mucoid plaque.
        • olive oil on vegetables instead of butter. This helps dissolve mucoid plaque.
        • 2 kelp capsules with breakfast. Natural source of iodine which supports thyroid function which has a beneficial effect on the digestive system.
        • 1 L-Tyrosine capsule with breakfast. Supports thyroid function which has a beneficial effect on the digestive system to help raise body temperature and burn mucoid waste.
        • 2 Gentian herb capsules with breakfast. Gentian root has been shown to stimulate the gallbladder and pancreas, and mucous membranes of the digestive system which indirectly can be helpful to loosen old mucoid plaque. Gentian can be toxic to the liver if taken for too long, but the benefit of cleansing the system outweighs this concern if taken for a short period.
        • 2 slippery elm capsule with breakfast. Slippery elm herb heals mucous membranes and ulcers.

        Follow the Urge.

        When you have to go to the bathroom, go! One of the reasons the cycle of constipation begins is because we tend to hold the urge to go too long because we have no time or because we are trying to be polite. Eventually, the nerves shut down and we have serious problem. Don’t rush. Don’t force either. Sometimes if you wait one more minute, you will get another wave of elimination. It is to your advantage to have as complete an evacuation as possible each time you are in the bathroom.

What to Expect.

        You will start seeing strange things coming out of you. This can be pretty exciting. You may not see the “ropes of mucous” that are described in other colon cleansing programs becuase this approach is gradually dissolving layers of hardended mucous rather than stripping off whole chunks. You should expect to have 2 or 3 bowel movements a day but the urge to go should be without panic because there are no laxatives used in this program. Some people report a connection between emotions and the physical waste that is being removed. As the layers of putrid matter are loosened, you may have dreams or feelings that come up which seem to be associated in the reverse order of those times in your life that the matter may have been originally deposited!

        • Long Term Positive Benefit
          Notice that you have so much more energy. This is because you are now able to absorb the full nutrition from the good food that you eat. Notice that you require less sleep and still wake refreshed. Notice that the little aches and pains that you used to have are gone. Notice that your eyes are so much brighter. Notice that your skin is softer, smoother and healthier-looking. Notice that you feel lighter and happier overall. Notice that you have lost weight. Notice that your digestive system works
          1000% better without needing laxatives or any type of support, as you’ve gotten things working correctly again!
        • Temporary Negative Impact
          You can expect to feel a little bloated at first as the psyllium is absorbing moisture in your gut. But eventually, this will go down as you progress through the program. You may feel strange “pulling” sensations that you never felt before, inside your gut. You may feel light-headed or dizzy or headachy as old toxins are stirred up within your system. You might feel gassier than normal as the toxins are released into gas form. Some people might develop a temporary skin rash as toxins are being released faster than can be eliminated. You may feel more tired than usual at first and then have surprising bouts of boundless energy. When your body becomes strong enough you MAY experience a “healing crisis” or a “cleansing reaction” or sometimes called the “Herxheimer reaction.” You reach a point where your body is ready to release massive quantities of toxins and every part of your being will do this. This usually lasts three days and you feel really sick. But the difference is that you are not “sick.” You are actually GETTING RID of the sickness within and it comes out every part of your being. Although the symptoms of a healing crisis may be uncomfortable, it is an event to look forward to because it is a sign of improving health.Your body knows what it is ready to handle. Please note: MOST PEOPLE NEVER NEED A HEALING CRISIS!

More Stuff You Can Do.

        The following are not necessary but should be considered, especially if you are very serious about improving your health.

        Chiropractic
        It is possible that the nerves to your intestinal tract are completely shut down due to an old injury. A chiropractor can detect if certain vertabrae are out of alignment. Each vertabra has nerves that come out and go to a different organ. If the spine is out of alignment then it is similar to a garden hose with a kink in it the water slows to a trickle. This is possibly what is happening with the neural energy that is supposed to trigger your intestines. You may only need one adjustment to see an amazing improvement!

        Get iridology pictures before and after
        This is completely optional! If you have the ability to have an Iridologist take pictures of your iris BEFORE you do this program and then compare again AFTER you do the program, you will be able to have proof of the healing that has taken place. This is absolutely fascinating and most people don’t know about this. The iris, or color portion of your eye is literally a map of your whole body. It reflects various states of health or sickness with minute changes of color. Each part of the iris corresponds to a part of the body. Some people have cleansed so Iridology Mirrormuch that their brown eyes became blue! At least dark toxic brown eyes become light brown and gray-blue will become bright blue, creating that “sparkle” effect. The part to look for is the ring immediately around the pupil. This is your intestinal tract. If it is a different color than the rest of your eye then you know you have lot of junk in there. If you’re into this, you’ll want to get an iridology mirror so you can monitor your progress.

        Do a parasite cleanse.
        Many sources agree that at least 80% of the population are infected with parasites. These are not just from food that we eat. If you’ve ever gone barefoot on the grass, you probably have parasites! They bore through the skin of the bottom of your feet and work their way through the body into every organ, including the brain, causing all kinds of illness and allergies. Wait until you’ve done the colon cleansing program for a while in order to clean out your “main sewer line” first. Do the parasite cleanse for 2 to 8 weeks and continue doing the colon cleanse during the same period. How do you know when you can stop the parasite cleanse? You will really feel amazingly better. The whites of your eyes will not have any red in them. There are many natural and herbal preparations to help remove visible and microscopic parasites. Here are my recommendations:

        • Fresh jalapeño peppers. This is overall a superior approach but hard to injest because they are so spicy. What you can do is to chop it up into little pieces and mix with yogurt and swallow without chewing. Ingest between 1 and 3 each day. Or, if you combine it with a food that has a high fat content, it won’t burn when you chew it. Try avocado or goat cheese. (Ever wonder why natives in Mexico don’t get stomach sickness.) Jalapeños can be purchased at most markets.
        • Raw pumpkin seeds contain an unusual amino acid called cucurbitin. This is believed to paralyze the worms over time, forcing them to loose their grip and get expelled from the body. These are available at most health food stores.
        • Clarkia Herbal Parasite Cleanse is an herbal preparation that contains black walnut hulls, wormwood, common cloves, and when used together is known to kill 100 types of parasites and their eggs. This product is hard to find and can be purchased here. (Once there, search for clarkia.)
        • Fennel Seed Oil or Fennel Tea. Fennel has been known to weaken many types of parasites, and this makes a good complement to the other techniques.
        • Garlic or Kyolic capsules.
        • Change habits with tap water. Our municipal water supply has become contaminated with parasites, including Campylobacter, Giardia and Cryptosporidia. When we wash our face and put our finger in our eyes, when we brush our teeth, when we “wash” our fruits and vegetables, we are actually perpetuating this parasite problem. It is not easy but if we make an effort to do these things with FILTERED water, we would stop reinfecting ourselves. Read below about getting a shower filter.
        • Adhere to the Parasite-Killing diet. During your parasite program, avoid: meat, poultry, fish, dairy, sugar of any kind, wheat, acid-forming foods.

        Do a liver flush
        It is preferable to do the parasite cleanse BEFORE attempting a liver flush. A healthy liver will actually help your colon function normally as the bile produced in the liver stimulates peristalsis. When you do the liver flush you should temporarily stop the colon cleanse procedure. There are many ways to do a liver flush but I recommend that you go here:

        Eat more alkaline-forming foods and less acid-forming foods. Here’s a great chart that shows which foods create an acid condition in the body and which foods create an alkaline condition in the body. It is suggested that we should try to consume 80% alkaline-forming foods and 20% acid-forming foods for optimal health but most people have this reversed.         Release dark emotions such as anger, rage, depression, fear or sadness. Sometimes psychotherapy is really helpful here. Meanwhile, please see our free tips on releasing anger, which would also be helpful for releasing the other heavy emotions.

        Clean up your piles. There is a parallel between your outer environment and your inner environment. When we accumulate piles of paper and piles of things around our desk and our house with the intention that I will “get to it one day,” this energetically reflects an inner “backup.” Little by little, go through those piles and throw stuff out or make that phone call or write that letter or fill out that form, etc. Deal with your outer mess and there will be a commensurate effect on your inner mess. (Maybe that’s why they call hemorrhoids “piles!”)
